Overview

CSG is seeking an Associate of Legislation & Public Policy to join CSG’s team of lobbyists providing our clients with high-level legislative advocacy services. The Associate will be integral in ensuring the day-to-day operations of the firm’s legislative efforts on behalf of our clients run smoothly. The Associate will be assigned to client teams on a variety of environmental issues including climate change, clean energy, water and natural resources conservation.

Key roles and responsibilities

The Associate's primary responsibility will be to provide high-level support to the Director of Legislation & Public Policy to ensure that our client’s goals and objectives are met. As deemed appropriate by the Director of Legislation & Policy, the Associate may be assigned as Client Manager to select CSG clients, where they will be responsible for overseeing CSG’s efforts on behalf of the client. Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Legislative Advocacy:
    • Under supervision and instruction of the Director of Legislation & Public Policy, assist in advocacy of CSG priority bills, including client testimony on priority bills and budget items.
    • In coordination with CSG’s Legislative Team, assist in identifying and communicating client legislative and budget interests for action, tracking and reporting.
    • Screen bills and amendments to identify legislation for client review and determination of actions status.
    • Work with Legislative Team to develop relationships with Legislators, staff, and members of the Administration.
  • Legislative Operations Coordination:
    • Provide high-level administrative support to Legislative Team and assist in managing statewide government relations operations by maintaining processes and procedures to keep the legislative team organized.
    • Assist in the management of client plans and meeting the deliverables required therein.
    • Track priority legislation, the legislative calendar, committee hearing schedules, and agency activity.
    • Assist in the production of collateral materials, including fact sheets, support letters, PowerPoint slides for presentation to external audiences (legislative offices, clients, conferences, etc.).
    • Assist in the coordination and preparation of meetings and participate in staff meetings, confeence calls, coalition meetings, planning sessions, and other events and activities.

You should have strong analytical skills and an interest in environmental issues affecting California. The ideal candidate has the ability to multitask and prioritize, and to take initiative and be proactive with ideas and organizational tools. Being a team player should be one of your core values. Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in the California Legislature or third house preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, government relations, public policy, environmental science, natural resource management or related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of California state agencies, legislative processes, and ballot process.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to conservation, equity, and environmental issues.
  • Ability to prioritize, adjust focus, and wear many hats in a fast-paced environment and a willingness to ask for clarification when needed and adhere to deadlines as assigned.
  • Experience handling confidential information appropriately.
  • Sound computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office, GSuite, and a working knowledge of database system functions preferred.
  • Ability to represent CSG in a professional manner.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

Location, salary, and benefits

The starting annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00 – $85,000.00, dependent on experience and qualifications. This is a hybrid position, with three days in our Sacramento office per week during the legislative session required.
